Cape Cod will once again be home to the region’s largest dog festival with the return of Paw Palooza on July 15 and 16 at Dennis-Yarmouth High School. The extravaganza is put on by The Agway of Cape Cod Charitable Foundation and benefits the Cape’s two largest animal shelters — the MSPCA in Centerville and the Animal Rescue League of Boston’s shelter in Brewster.
The featured entertainment of the two-day event is the thrilling DockDogs® tournament. DockDogs® is the fastest growing water sport for dogs with sanctioned tournaments taking place from Coast to Coast. In an awe-inspiring display of canine athleticism, dogs jump from a platform into a 40-foot pool, competing for distance, height and speed. While veteran teams will be traveling from all over New England to compete, novices are also welcome and practice sessions will be available to all registered dogs in between competitions. You can register your dog to participate online at www.pawpaloozacapecod.com or on-site at the event.
In addition to the DockDogs® competition, the Paw Palooza Show Ring will have its own version of flying dogs! World record holder Mike Piazza and his team of high flying Frisbee dogs have performed nationwide and are considered the number one Frisbee performers in the world. Piazza and his Border Collies will delight fans with a performance on Saturday afternoon.
K-9 units from the Barnstable County Sheriff and Yarmouth Police Departments will also be on hand to showcase the skills of their working patrol dogs. The interactive demonstrations will include a mock narcotics search, simulated criminal apprehension, and audience Q&A. In addition, the Show Ring will feature agility demonstrations from the Cape Cod Kennel Club and a chance for participants to try the equipment courtesy of the Chatham Dog Club.
In between the action, attendees can brush up on their pet know-how at “Doggie U”. The Doggie University tent will feature guest professors delivering 30 minute seminars on a variety of hot topics, including ticks. Experts from the MSPCA and Animal Rescue League will also share fascinating news about disaster deployment and answer your most pressing questions about dog behavior and health.
In addition to the entertainment and educational components, the Paw Palooza Vendor Fair will include nearly seventy vendors showcasing and selling the hottest new trends in the pet industry. Dog- and kid-friendly activities, such as Pupcasso Art Making, a Kissing Booth, face painting, tug toy making, doggie and kid caricatures, inflatables and doggie facials, will be among the fun offerings. Dogs can also romp off leash in the enclosed, “leash free” play zones, which will be monitored by trained volunteers. If the mercury rises, guests and their pups will be able to stay cool at the puppy pool pavilion and newly added misting tents this year. Also new this year is a Raffle Tent featuring spectacular prize packages.
Admission is $5 (no charge for kids 12 and under or dogs). Through the newly established Agway of Cape Cod Charitable Foundation, net proceeds will be donated to The Animal Rescue League of Boston’s Brewster shelter and the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ (MSPCA) Centerville shelter. The two humane organizations will be on site at the event with information about their organizations.
