The shanties provide visitors to Bismore Park, Ocean Street, Hyannis Harbor the opportunity to find something handmade or hand crafted by local artists. The program features Cape Cod artists and artisans, who frequently work on their craft right at their “seaside studio”. Shanties are open Friday’s –Sunday’s in May/June, including Monday, Memorial Day; seven days a week as of June 20th, always open from 11:00 am. Entertainment at the shanties takes place July through September.
The Hyannis HyArts Artist Shanties feature a variety of artists, rotating in and out of the shanties on a weekly basis throughout the season. Over 85 artists will participate in the 2016 program. Artwork varies throughout the season including photography, jewelry, painting, fiber arts, ceramics, rope work, mosaics, woodworking, window art, and more. Literary arts return with many Cape Cod authors spending weekends at the shanties and Cotuit Library takes up residence the weekend of June 17th-19th.
June 3rd-5th, one of the seven shanties will feature the works of over 100 students from Cape Cod Can. Cape Cod Can will feature the work created under the direction of local Cape artists made during their Arts is for Everyone for their people with disabilities program.
Each shanty is named for one of the town’s villages: Barnstable, Centerville, Cotuit, Hyannis, Marstons Mills, Osterville and West Barnstable. New this year, the exteriors of each shanty feature photographs from each of the town of Barnstable’s seven villages. Local photographer Marie Grady Palcic has researched historical archives for many of the Barnstable locales she has photographed, and presents photographs from the ‘early days,’ in contrast to how the villages appear today. In addition, each shanty will showcase a collage from the “Seven Series –seven images from each of the seven villages based on a theme, along with a village ‘beauty shot.’ The photo murals will be on display during the entire shanty season, May-October each year.
