Town Hall is open Monday through Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm (except State and Federal holidays) and frequently opens during evening hours for scheduled meetings. Town Hall is located at 367 Main Street, Hyannis.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
“I love color, the bolder and brighter the better, and I try to capture that beauty and energy in my paintings,” says Joan Lockhart, an Eastham resident and oil painter. “Whether I am setting up a still life in my studio or painting a field of flowers en plein air, the intensity and juxtapositions of color in the scene are what inspire me. I enjoy painting many subjects, but the common element in all of my paintings is beautiful, intense color!”
A fine art major in college, Lockhart chose to spend her career in technology start-ups, many of which were in art-related fields. “I was so fortunate to have been around creative people in my work, and also to have had the opportunity to travel around the world. I was exposed to so many different geographies and cultures, which all left strong visual impressions.”
“Barnstable’s ‘Art on Loan’ program is such a great opportunity for an artist like me, who is not represented by a gallery, to be able to show a large selection of my work in a public space,” Lockhart states. She has participated in several other group shows through this program.
Lockhart retired to Cape Cod three years ago and found a vibrant and welcoming art community that she quickly embraced. She is an artist member of the Cape Cod Art Center in Barnstable, served on the Board of the Creative Art Center in Chatham, and is a member of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, Castle Hill in Truro, the Cultural Center in Yarmouth and the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis. She also paints with the Paul Schulenburg Studio Group, and recently organized an exhibition of the group’s work in Hyannis. When not painting, she manages the Eastham food pantry.
Like many artists before her, she finds the scenery on Cape Cod inspiring, and describes the light on Cape Cod as prismatic — reflecting and intensifying the colors found in nature. “Everywhere I go on the Cape, I can find a subject I’d like to paint – the sunlight illuminating a vintage cottage, the purple shadows in the dunes or a beautiful garden. And I often vacation with artist friends to new locations, so this show contains landscapes painted in Florida, Maine and Cape Ann, as well as Cape Cod.”
Lockhart says: “I am often accused of painting with a big smile on my face, and to that I must answer, ‘guilty’! I can’t think of a better way to spend my days than with a brush in hand, a colorful subject in front of me, and a palette loaded with brilliant dabs of paint.” She adds, “I hope the people who see my show will share in some of this joy.”
